Course Content
THEORETICAL
PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY OF CROPS : Production technology of the following field crops with reference to economic importance, origin, area and production, growth stages, climate and soil requirements, species, cultivars, cultivation practices, post harvest operations and cost of production :
Cereal Crops: Rice, Wheat, Barley, Maize, Foxtail millet, Proso-millet and
Pearl millet.
Sugar crops: Sugarcane and Sugarbeet.
Pulse crops: Lentil, Mungbean, Black gram, Grass pea, Chickpea and Pigeon
pea. Cowpea.

Oil seed crops : Mustard, Groundnut, Soybean, Sesame, Niger, Linseed, Safflower,Sunflower and Castor.

Practical
1.Raising a crop in individual plot and studying the crop phenology.
2.Preparation of nursery bed for rice.
3.Raising sugarcane seedling in poly bag and seedbed.
4. Practising Lateral Shoot Technique(LST) for raising sugarcane seedling.
5.Practising different methods of planting sugarcane.
6.Practising intercultural operations in different crops included in the course.
7.Observation on harvest symptoms of cereal, sugar, pulse and oil seed crops.
8. Computation of production cost of crops.
9.Calculations related to crop production technique(plant population, fertilizer requirement, water requirement & yield estimation)
10. Visit to a sugar mill.

SEED: Concept, Importance, Classification and structure. Seed formation and development. Characteristics of quality seeds. Significance of quality seed in agriculture. Factors affecting seed quality during production and processing.
SEED GERMINATION: Definition, types and process of seed germination. Factors affecting seed germination.
SEED VIABILITY AND VIGOR: Concept of seed viability and vigor. Factors affecting seed viability and seed vigor. Significance of seed vigor in crop production.
SEED DORMANCY: Definition, types, advantages and disadvantages of seed dormancy. Causes and methods of breaking seed dormancy.
SEED RATE: Concept, importance and factors affecting seed rate. Real value of seed. Determination of seed rate of crops.
SEED CROP CULTIVATION: Principles. Methods of seed crop cultivation. Harvesting, threshing and processing of seeds.
SEED TREATMENT: Concept, principles, objectives and types of seed treatment. Methods of seed treatment. Seed treating chemicals.
SEED STORAGE: Principles and importance. Storage facilities in Bangladesh. Pre-storage factors affecting seed storability and factors affecting seed longevity and deterioration in storage.
SEED TESTING: Definition and objectives. Seed sampling. Testing of seeds for moisture, purity, germination, viability and vigor.
SEED CERTIFICATION: Concept and objectives. Seed classes. Seed Certification procedure. National Seed Board (NSB) and Seed Certification Agency (SCA).
SEED QUARANTINE: Concept, importance and method. Status of seed quarantine in Bangladesh.
PRACTICAL
1. Identification of seeds of field crops

3. Production of a seed crops and working out its cost of production.
4. Observation of physiological and harvesting maturity of crops.
5. Practicing grading and treatment of seed.
6. Seed sampling, Seed moisture estimation. Purity, Germination, Viability and Vigor test of seed
7. Working out the seed rate of important crops.
8. Visit to a seed multiplication farm and seed-processing center.
